When she presses the lock button once, it locks the doors. When she presses the lock button twice, she gets 2 horn sounds and no blinking lights. It is not a power liftgate. Have the same issue with the inside and outside release switch. When you push the button, you can hear a click under the glovebox and the liftgate ajar warning comes on. It will not pull open when you exit the vehicle. Occasionally if you continue to hit the release, the back will click and the latch will release.How to remove broken lock actuator on Ford escape.

It seems the cause was the 2 black plastic alignment pieces that the latch slips into. These were a problem on some 2017's. What I did was bend them out to make them wider so the latch fits in between better. Mine would never fully close.
